Mass of Christian Burial for Erwin Bartels, 88, of Hereford will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Reverend Anthony Neusch, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Anthony's Catholic Church under the personal supervision of Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Bartels passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 in Amarillo. A prayer vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Erwin John Bartels was born November 29, 1929 in Hermleigh, Texas to John and Freida Roemisch Bartels. He attended Church and School in Hermleigh. He met and fell in love with Jerline Schwertner and they later married on April 21, 1954 in Rowena, Texas. Erwin was a life-long Catholic and was a very active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hereford since moving here in 1957. Erwin was a member of Hereford Elks Lodge and was awarded an “Honorary Life Membership”. He was a charter member of the Sons of Herman in Rowena, Erwin loved to play dominos and 42. He often played dominos at West Way Fertilizer. He enjoyed dancing and would hold “garage dances” often.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife of 63 years Jerline Bartels of Hereford; 6 daughters, Sharon Duesterhaus and husband Tony of Lake Ivie, Texas, and Judy Phelps and husband Don of Winters, Texas, both from his first marriage, Barbara Skidmore and husband Anthony of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Wanda Jones and husband William of Jacksboro, Texas, Patsy Cornelius and husband Gary of Olivia, Minnesota, and June Ward and husband Terry of Jacksboro, Texas; five sons, Gary Bartels and wife Belinda of Dawn, Donald Bartels, Rick Bartels and wife Danielle, Darrell Bartels and Bryan Bartels all of Hereford; 3 sisters, Anita Schilling of Dimmitt, Bernice Layman of Hereford, and Hilda Reissig of Boerne, Texas; twenty five grandchildren; twenty five great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren

Mr. Bartels was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Leonard Bartels; twin daughters Jeanette and Annette in 1957. His first wife Rita Halfman, whom he married in 1950, and passed away in 1952.

The family suggests that memorials in Mr. Bartels name be made to St Anthony’s Catholic School Endowment Fund, 114 Sunset St., Hereford, Texas 79045.
